Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar: Enjoying Romance or Ranting?

Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar is a movie that has currently offered us old Bollywood tropes present in rom-coms that we do not mind watching simply because we have enjoyed this genre over the years. Luv Ranjan gives several meta jokes from his filmography and other films that will count for laugh-out-loud moments in theatres.

The Hindi cinema audience had certainly reached a saturation point with many commercial romantic movies not delivering their content. Most of these films would be highly anticipated either due to the casting of actors or the director who is at the helm of all things. Movies like Jab Harry Met Sejal and Love Aaj Kaal (2020) are examples of movies with a bankable star cast and both were directed by Imtiaz Ali.

So much to our shock, these movies flopped not only from a commercial point of view but also resonated with the masses from a storytelling POV. So, when Luv Ranjan announced that he was roping in Ranbir Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor for his next romantic comedy venture Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar, I was cautiously optimistic as I did not want to get my hopes high back then.

Good Escapism Along With A Great Cast

Shraddha Kapoor was returning to the big screen after three years and we all know how capable Ranbir Kapoor is in the romantic comedy space. Also, Luv Ranjan has seen huge success in this genre with movies like the Pyaar Ka Punchnama series and Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety. And pinning my hopes solely based on these factors did not prove fruitful in the past.

With all these thoughts clattered in my mind and going by the initial positive word-of-mouth, I stepped into the theatres with a glimmer of hope that after a long time, I would wholeheartedly enjoy an old-school Bollywood romantic comedy keeping my logic aside. And for me, the movie delivered exactly what it had promised: good escapism.

However, his trademark rants this time seem all over the place and are performed by actors in an extremely fast-paced manner. It’s not that you don’t get the gist of what they want to convey but in this film, it is way too excessive and tiring to listen to most of the time.

It is in the second half that we see a refreshingly new step taken by the director as compared to his previous rom-com. The film does not make the woman an all-out conniving and scheming individual with hateful banter by the men regarding the existence of women. Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar attempts to showcase the complexities of a relationship when individual perspectives and desires clash without vilifying either of the sexes.

The supporting cast gives convincingly amusing performances, with Anubhav Singh Bassi and Dimple Kapadia stealing the show. But of course, the main highlight is the lead pair of Ranbir and Shraddha.

Shraddha Kapoor, apart from being gorgeous and stunning, understands the quirkiness of Luv Ranjan’s world and gives an enjoyable performance. Ranbir Kapoor had once said in an interview that Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar would probably be his last outing in the rom-com space as he feels he has now matured from it. And if this is what he feels, then he has left the genre proving that he will always be a pro with roles like this.
