Plot

It is believed by some that a crow is a special bird that guides the soul of the dead to the afterlife.  But can this process be reversed? The film revolves around Eric Draven, a musician and his lover Shelly Webster who are both brutally murdered when Shelly’s past comes back to haunt her. They both get resurrected and Eric decides to go on the path of revenge to make the people responsible for it suffer.

Previous adaptations of Eric Draven

Based on the character created by James O’Barr, the 5th reboot of the fan-favorite story will be directed by Rupert Sanders who is popular for his works like Snow White and The Huntsmen (2012) and Ghost in the Shell (2017). The Crow is not just another horror movie, the movie has its history.

The Graphic novel has been adapted into cinema numerous times, and we have seen the many versions of Eric Draven. The actors who have played the part in the past were Brandon Lee, Vincent Pérez, Mark Dacascos, Eric Mabius, and Edward Furlong. The first and most popular one is of Brandon Lee who is the son of legendary martial artist Bruce Lee. Brandon Lee tragically died during the filming of the 1994 adaptation due to a ‘firearm malfunction’.

As the time has finally arrived to pass on the mantle, on Brandon’s 30th death anniversary. The new Crow is a tribute to the late actor, Rupert Sander shared in an interview with the Vanity Fair.

“Brandon was an original voice and I think he will always be synonymous with ‘The Crow’ and I hope he’s proud of what we’ve done and how we’ve brought the story back again. His soul is very much alive in this film.

There’s a real fragility and beauty to his version of the Crow, and I think Bill feels like he is a successor to that.” Sanders further explained how he was pulled towards the concept of the film, he shared, “What drew me to this was the opportunity to make a dark romance, something that dealt with loss, grief, and the ethereal veil between life and death and reaching through that”

The original character design from the comic consists of Eric with a punk rock hairdo and dark eye makeup but some fans are worried after seeing the first look of Rupert Sander’s Draven who is light on makeup if we are comparing it to the comic.

Rupert talks about how “Bill has a disturbing beauty”; he also shares that he drew inspiration from ‘Sunflower’ singer Post Malone and Lil Peep. Sander’s version is called a little bit modernized; fans hope it remains true to the original concept and honors the creator’s work.
